A double scale model for bioremediation of a soil sample under gravity driven flow

We model the process of contaminant consumption by bacteria growing in a polluted soil in the form of a biofilm attached to the porous matrix. In addition to the dynamics of the biofilm and to the related chemistry, the problem includes the flow of water transporting a free biomass and the evolution of the latter. The governing equations are written first at the microscopic scale (assuming some specific geometry for the internal structure of the medium) and then an upscaling procedure is applied (taking advantage of the presence of two distinct spatial scales) to derive the macroscopic differential system.
