Modular algorithms for the numerical solution of the flow rate boundary value problem

Abstract


In many engineering fluid dynamics problems, the computational domain is part of a system or a network. In this case, a part of the boundary does not correspond to a physical wall, and it is just introduced to limit the domain of interest. The prescription of boundary conditions on such artificial boundaries can be source of numerical inaccuracies. In particular, in different contexts of internal fluid dynamics there is sometimes the problem of managing numerically defective boundary data sets, namely data that are not enough to have a mathematically well posed problem.
At the practical level, in the engineering literature this problem has been solved by choosing a velocity profile fitting the given defective datum (engineering approach). Here we present two strategies for the prescription of defective data, focusing on the
formulations, the algorithms and some numerical results.
