Wave propagation in a stratified layer via the matricant

Time-harmonic wave propagation, in continuously-layered
anisotropic viscoelastic solids, is investigated. Based on a thermodynamic requirement, the equation of motion is set up in an equivalent first-order (Stroh-like) system of equations. For definiteness, wave propagation is allowed to happen in a layer sandwiched by two homogeneous half-spaces. The material properties of the layer vary in one direction and are piecewise continuous. The solution is found through the matricant which is shown to be given by a uniformly convergent series. Next the reflection-transmission process is considered for an isotropic solid. The corresponding reflection and transmission coefficients are determined for oblique horizontally-polarized waves.
